The Treasures of the Mayan...

From the temple went terraces leading down to the river Huatanay. There was the golden garden  that caused the admiration of the conquistadors and became for all writers an inexhaustible source of poetryEverything was goldgrass, flowers, trees, reptiles, birds, and even the shepherd himself, paying tribute to the Sun, gold being its terrestrial emanation,  concentration of the vassal peoples offerings,Supreme and powerful testament of the Sun God.

With the arrival of the Spaniards, it was pillaged and razed from top to bottom. The golden tiles covering the walls were stolen and the mummies of ancient kings, desecrated.Only the foundations was left, which shortly after, served as the foundation for the construction of the church and the convent of Santo DomingoSome of their masks and other common objects are exhibited in many museums, including the best known, the Gold Museum in Bogota, Colombia. Because they used gold and gems in the manufacture of their objecteven the simplest such as plates or cutleryexactly as if the precious metal cost them nothing!

The total amount of gold found among the Maya exceeds more than one billion euros. Many of their treasures were looted by the conquistadors and the most important part of their treasures was never to be seen again ...
