It is clear that the assessment of good or bad, valuable or worthless, are in fact unjustifiable, and are at best an expression of our subjectivity.
This becomes more evident when one thinks in terms of energy, particularly solar energy, source of all life. Energy is "neutral" in the sense that it depends on you for it to be considered positive or negative - in other words how you use it, for constructive or destructive goals. This means that what you want or rather "put out", you get, it is legitimate. Unfortunately, most people say they didn't at all want what they've gone through, it could be more easily understood with these words, "what you focus on, you get" slightly different but altogether the same.
Creation has given us free will so we can experience life in all its fullness. Life is not to be experienced only in pleasure and beauty. We are absolutely free to experience what we want. It remains to prove our satisfaction with what we get ... but at least we have free choice. Life is a school.
