Practising forgiveness

To rid yourself of your resentment, I suggest the following exercise which has been tried and tested. Choose a moment when you are calm and relaxed. If necessary, relax for a few minutes beforehand. Close your eyes and say aloud:

I forgive … (the person you resent the most, whether they are from your past or present, whether they are alive or dead), and I forgive you for … (what they did or what you believe they did to you).

Repeat this phrase and allow love to take the place of any other feelings. Repeat the exercise at least  twice a week until you no longer feel any resistance within you. When you have achieved a sense of re-established harmony and good will, visualise the person concerned once more. They are standing in front of you and you say:

Thank you, now I release you.

Do this exercise for 5 to 10 minutes. Look deep into your heart to discover the feelings of injustice that it still harbours and allow them to dissipate. When you feel sufficiently free, turn your attention to yourself. Say aloud:

I forgive myself for …

Practice these exercises sincerely even though they may initially appear simple, not to say “simplistic". You will soon notice that they are in fact extremely  powerful and remarkably effective.
