Guardian angels, invocations, white magic
Scientific progress hasn't done anything to dispel belief in supernatural forces – far from it – it has only boosted their appeal and therefore the development of everything grouped under the name of “occult sciences” or ESOTERICISM (secrets shared by the initiated). Many scientists are violently opposed to occultism which they regard as pure nonsense and superstition. And yet, it’s perfectly clear that esotericism has never before had so many followers as it has today. And what about you? How many times have you (consciously or unconsciously) used expressions which refer to magic or divine powers (saints, angels, gods, spirits, etc.) or even called on them for help? Probably much oftener than you think, even if you were only using ready-made expressions like “God help me” … “Thank Heavens!” … “Saints preserve us”.
A fascination for the divine and a desire to harness mysterious forces are all part of Man’s most ancient heritage. What could be more natural than to appeal to a god, a saint, or some other powerful entity when we find ourselves in a tricky situation or when we simply want destiny to be kind to us. The various mythologies that have developed around the world are full of protective deities. However for the single god of a monotheistic religion and even the multiple gods of a polytheistic religion, it’s a “full-time job” governing the destinies of all human beings. And this is why Man has found it infinitely more reassuring to appeal to a personal genius (or tutelary spirit) assigned to watch over him from cradle to grave. From the Middle Ages, these genii became “guardian angels” in accordance with religious beliefs of the era. However, such spirits are referred to way back in Hebrew tradition and this is where you need to look to find your own.
There are 72 of them in total, six within each astrological sign, and the four most senior “Archangels” are: Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael.
Angels and Archangels are said to be intermediaries between God and Man. Your date of birth determines which particular angel watches over you more than any other.
When you feel robbed of all your luck, crushed by adversity, deprived of all your vital energies, invoke your personal guardian angel. You should invoke him by calling his Name (check carefully), followed by his Attribute, and then you should recite the appropriate prayer, depending on your birth sign.

Making a Pentacle
Start by gathering all the information and materials that relate to you personally, taking account of your astrological sign, your surname and first name: numbers, geometric figures, colours, symbols, patron saint, etc.
Choose a favourable period for making your pentacle by using astrology and numerology to work out your lucky days. Then consult an astronomical almanac in order to determine when the astral conjunction is most favourable for you (refer to an aspect chart). To make your pentacle, choose as a priority the day on which your planetary ruler is in the same position as on the day of your birth. If, on this day, your planetary ruler is in an unfavourable aspects with the Sun, Venus, Mars or Jupiter, choose another day to make your pentacle. To obtain detailed information on this subject, you should refer to an astronomical almanac. If you do not have access to such a book, consult an astrologer or use the Internet to find a web site specialising in astrology.
Also choose an environment that corresponds to the element that characterises your astrological sign:
Earth for Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn people
Fire for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius people
Air for Gemini, Libra and Aquarius people
Water for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces people
You will therefore be barefoot on the earth if yours is an Earth sign, in the open air if yours is an Air sign, as near as possible to water (the sea, a lake or a river) if yours is a Water sign, and in front of a fire (an open hearth or near a wood fire) if yours is a Fire sign.
In my books I describe more in detail how to proceed.

Pentacles
The pentacle is a magic figure designed to use invisible forces – waves, fluids, vibrations – to achieve a very precise aim. Unlike a talisman or lucky charm, a pentacle is not an object but merely an image or representation, a geometric figure to which names, letters and numbers are added. It is drawn on a flat surface, usually parchment (a natural material) or, failing that, on natural (not synthetic) paper or fabric: for example, cotton, linen, wool, or paper made from wood pulp.
Pentacles and planets
A pentacle should:
• bring together specific forces that are directly related to the user, i.e. their astrological sign, their secret numbers, their planetary ruler;
• invoke the forces best able to achieve the required aim or wish. Thus for a health problem, Mars and the Sun would be invoked, while affairs of the heart fall within the province of Venus.
Each planet is represented by a symbol rather than its name.
The following information will help you to choose the right planet.
The Sun, represented by a circle with a central dot, is the symbol of authority, success, wealth, the male genitalia and the heart. By extension, the Sun is invoked in order to obtain power, honour, wealth, vitality and especially for a heart or circulatory problem.
The Sun is also the planetary ruler of Leo people.
The Moon, represented by a crescent (section of a circle), is the
symbol femininity (mother, birth, family), the emotions, intuition,
water and dreams. The Moon is invoked when you want to have
a child or a successful birth, promote happiness within the family,
be cured of a mental illness and especially to become famous.
The Moon is also the planetary ruler of Cancer people.
Mercury is represented by a circle with a cross at the lowest
point on its circumference and a small arc (open at the top) at the
highest point on its circumference. Mercury symbolises writing,
communication, intelligence, practical sense, ingenuity, cunning,
theft and travel, and is invoked for success in business, the
successful conclusion of a contract, obtaining employment,
passing an exam, making a long-distance journey, obtaining news
of someone, selling or buying something. Mercury is also the
planetary ruler of Gemini and Virgo people.
Venus, represented by a circle with a cross at the lowest point on
its circumference, symbolises the emotions in general and love
in particular, beauty, the arts, union, sensuality and happiness in
general. Venus is invoked when you want to attract the love of a
particular person, for a marriage or an engagement, when you
need money to improve your lifestyle or when you need to invoke
luck. Venus is also the planetary ruler of Taurus and Libra
people.
Mars, represented by a circle with an arrow on the right-hand
upper section of its circumference, symbolises courage, energy,
health, action, violence, war, weapons, conflict, violent desire,
virility and fire. Mars is invoked when you want to win a
competition, triumph over an enemy, recover your health,
overcome a fear or win a war. Mars is also the planetary ruler
of Aries people.
Jupiter, represented by a cross with an arc (open to the left) at
the left-hand end of the crosspiece, symbolises luck, sociability,
honours, generosity, charisma, authority, the law, religion, faith,
foreign lands, journeys and adventure. Jupiter is invoked when
you want to obtain honours, win an election, obtain an important
post or prominent position, achieve a comfortable lifestyle or gain
support. Jupiter is also the planetary ruler of Sagittarius people.
Saturn, represented by a cross with an arc (open at the lower
end) on the lower right-hand side of the upright, symbolises
fatality, time, concentration, cold, illness, enemies, misfortune,
death, old age, solitude, meditation, the father, ambition, duty and
constraints. Saturn is invoked when you want to succeed in an
undertaking, obtain a post or position of authority, succeed in your
studies or research, find a lost object, retire, achieve inner peace
or put your life in order. Saturn is also the planetary ruler of
Capricorn people.
Uranus, represented by a circle surmounted by a cross with an
arc at either end of the crosspiece, symbolises innovation, scientific
discovery, thunder, electricity, independence, liberty, air, aircraft,
rebellion, friendship, nervousness and passing fancies. Uranus is
invoked when you want to bring change into your life (moving
house, departure, arrival, changing your job), make new discoveries, travel (by air), gain someone’s friendship, form an association or break free. Uranus is also the planetary ruler of Aquarius people.
Neptune, represented by the trident of Poseidon (the Greek god
of the sea) with a cross on the lower part of the upright, symbolises
water, fish, the psyche, intuitive dreams, passivity, illness, the
past, the subconscious, sensitivity, naiveté, mystery, music and
poetry. Neptune is invoked when you need inspiration or intuition,
when you want to travel (by sea) or invoke occult powers. Neptune
is also the planetary ruler of Pisces people.
Pluto is represented either by a P with a horizontal foot on the
right-hand side of the upright, or by a circle doubled by a semicircle
in its lower half with a downward-pointing cross at the
lowest point of the semi-circle. Pluto symbolises the powers of
the nether world, evil, the devil, epidemics, mines, sexuality and
destruction, and is invoked when you want to summon occult
powers, recover your sexual energy or triumph over your enemies.

Talismans
The metals most commonly used to make talismans are:
Gold has always been regarded as the most perfect of the metals. It was widely used in the cult of the Sun and is still used to make objects for religious worship. The druids used it to make such ritual instruments as billhooks and knives. For Christians, gold was the symbol of faith.Over the centuries, this very special metal was used to make lucky charms that protected the wearer, favoured recovery from illness and brought honour.
Silver is also regarded as a perfect metal. Associated with the Moon, it is the counterpart of gold which is associated with the Sun. Silver is the symbol of femininity. It represents purity, wards off demons and promotes intuition.
Copper is believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and drive out ghosts and bad vibrations. Worn as a bracelet or a ring, it cures migraine, rheumatism and cramp. It can be used in place of gold.
Pewter is a greyish white metal that looks like silver. It favours premonitory dreams.
Bronze is an alloy of pewter, silver and copper. The fact that it unites metals with often opposing powers makes it extremely powerful. It increases physical strength, and offers protection against wounds and injury in war.
Iron, a precious metal in ancient times, is no longer regarded as such. It symbolises severity and stubbornness.
Lead is associated with the planet Saturn and symbolises heaviness. It was highly prized by alchemists (such as the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus, 1493-1541) who dreamed of transforming it into gold. It is invested with very special powers and favours divination.
MAKING A TALISMAN
Making a talisman requires a knowledge of magic formulae that use the power of names, numbers, geometric figures, and magic drawings. It also presupposes an in-depth knowledge of astrological signs and numerological symbols. A talisman is more complex than a lucky charm or amulet. Usually, the wearer waits passively for a lucky charm to ward off evil. A talisman, however, is made according to a precise ritual and plays a much more specific role – for example, regaining the affection of a loved one, recovery from illness, finding a lost object, defeating an enemy or passing an exam.
Unlike lucky charms and amulets, a talisman represents animals, plants, names and numbers by using associated symbols, a symbol being the form of expression that links an object to an idea or archetype by a logical series of meanings. Thus the archetype “AIR” can be symbolised by the sky, birds, freedom or weightlessness. By extension, having an eagle as a talisman or totem bestows the power of mobility and the power to break free from all forms of constraint.
Putting the image of a bird’s foot or an eagle’s claw on a talisman will, by association, lead to the archetype AIR and will invest the user with the power to regain lost liberty or to retain the liberty that he or she already possesses!
Although a relatively extensive body of esoteric knowledge is required to make a talisman, the role of the user is still relatively passive. This is not the case for the user of a pentacle.

Lucky charms and amulets
A lucky charm is an object which, as its name suggests, brings good luck by itself, without the use of religious or magic practices. In some cultures, lucky charms are known as fetishes or grigris. The role of the person wearing or carrying the charm is entirely passive since merely having it about your person is enough to ward off misfortune. The object regarded as lucky represents or symbolises a protective and primarily psychic power. For example, the photograph of someone you love is a kind of lucky charm because, by carrying it with you, you have the feeling that you are “appropriating” the person in the photograph, either by protecting them (photo of a child) or being protected by them (photo of someone who has died or of a lover, husband or wife).
The list of lucky charms is endless. Some are fashionable, while others belong to a specific culture or people. They can be vegetable (plants), animal or mineral (stones and metals). Some are closely associated with urban traditions and others are essentially rural. They can be used as they are or, if they are too rare or too large and cumbersome, a substitute is used, often a replica of the lucky charm (precious stone, animal, etc.) Thus, in the absence of a living elephant, we make do with a more or less precious piece of jewellery in the form of an elephant.
An amulet (also known as a grigri in Africa) is more elaborate than a lucky charm. It is made by craftsmen initiated into the art according to very precise rituals and in the greatest secrecy. Amulets can be made from several types of materials – usually vegetable, animal or mineral – that are regarded as lucky. Often, objects belonging (directly or indirectly) to the person involved in the wish to be granted are also used to make the amulet. Thus, feathers, teeth, saliva, roots, flowers, hairs, locks of hair, blood, sweat and soil can be used in accordance with formulae, handed down from generation to generation by American Indians, African and Haitian witch doctors, or the rural inhabitants of Europe, to name but a few! Long-distance travel, favoured by the development of easily accessible communication networks, has encouraged the exchange of lucky charms between East and West, North and South. The popularisation of the knowledge of other civilisations and cultures (for example, classical antiquity, primitive Africa) has also contributed to the use of amulets that were previously unknown.
Below is a brief summary of the best-known and most widely used lucky charms and amulets:
Lucky charms from the plant kingdom
This is the most ancient form of lucky charm. Plants have been used since prehistoric times for their food value and their medicinal and magic qualities.
The four-leaf clover is undoubtedly one of the oldest and best-known lucky charms. Eve is supposed to have taken one with her when she was driven out of Paradise! Carrying a four-leaf clover is a guarantee of financial prosperity and good fortune, hence the expression “to be in clover”!
Mistletoe was the sacred plant of the druids of pre-Christian Gaul and Britain. Together with the oak, its preferred host, this parasitic plant still has a certain symbolism today. Kissing under the mistletoe at New Year is a guarantee of financial prosperity and good health.
The oak was for a long time regarded as a sacred tree and symbolises longevity, physical strength and moral authority.
Lily of the valley, associated with May and spring festivals, attracts love and promises a good harvest.
The olive tree is a popular lucky charm due to its longevity and resistance, especially to fire. It was the symbol of victory and peace in Japan, India and ancient Greece. Its therapeutic properties, used since the earliest times, have merely reinforced the belief in its powers.
Like the olive, the fig is also invested with a powerful symbolism (especially in Mediterranean countries) that makes it a natural choice for a lucky charm. Like the olive and the vine, it symbolises abundance. It is also a symbol of fertility.
The mandrake is also one of oldest and most widely used lucky charms. It is a Mediterranean plant whose flowers vary from whitish to purple and whose strangely twisted roots resemble the shape of a human body. It is the root, in particular, that is regarded as an extremely powerful lucky charm. The plant’s hallucinogenic properties were discovered early in history (for example, the reference to the magic potion of Circe in Homer’s Odyssey). In the Middle Ages, it was often the attribute of witches and wizards who used it to make love potions. Later, a mandrake (or mandragora) root was believed to double a person’s fortune in a year. Carrying or wearing a mandrake root was also supposed to develop the wearer’s predictive powers and enable them to see into the future and read other people’s minds. It was also believed to bring luck in love and, in some rural regions of Europe (for instance, Poitou and Charente in France), is still regarded as a cure for all ills.
Lucky charms from the animal kingdom
A great many animals are believed to bring good luck. Sometimes it is the whole animal, or its image, that is regarded as the lucky charm. Often, it is a specific part of an animal that brings luck and protection.
The ladybird has been regarded as a very special insect since prehistoric times. If a ladybird lands on you, it is a considered a sign of good luck and you will have as many months of happiness as there are black spots on its wings.
The beetle (or scarab), like the ladybird, is a symbol of happiness. It is also a symbol of honour and success and is often used in talismans.
The cat is an enigmatic creature regarded as a good or bad omen depending on its colour. A black cat in your house or on board your ship will protect you against the evil eye.
The owl was often the attribute of soothsayers in ancient Greece (the little owl, Athene noctua, was sacred to the goddess Athena). While regarded by some as a bird of good omen, in some rural areas it is still believed to have evil powers.
Fish were also considered to be lucky well before Christianity made the fish the symbol of resurrection and life (the archetype of WATER). The star fish and sea horse are regarded as lucky charms because of their unusual shapes.
The snake and spider are linked to a symbolism that is part of our “collective subconscious”. Spiders are the agents of a great many predictions, depending on when you see them (morning or evening) and their colour (black or grey). The fear inspired by the snake and the mystery associated with the shedding of its skin, make it a very special animal invested with many (good and evil) powers. It is an important symbol in many civilisations, especially in the form of the ouroboros, the emblematic serpent of ancient Egypt and Greece. Represented with its tail in its mouth, continually devouring and being reborn from itself, the ouroboros was the symbol of constant renewal, the triumph of life over death. By extension, the lizard is also highly prized as a lucky charm.
Amphibians (frogs and toads), although not regarded as lucky charms, are used in certain talismans in the form of powder, dried skin and saliva. The salamander is a newt-like amphibian that symbolises the power of fire.
The tortoise is also invested with an age-old symbolism associated with longevity and power.
The pig, or at least its image or the image of its tail, is always regarded as a lucky charm that guarantees prosperity (which is why money boxes are often in the form of a pig).
While the rabbit is the symbol of fertility, a rabbit’s foot is a lucky charm that brings success in any form of undertaking.
The image of an elephant, preferably white, is considered to be a lucky charm or, failing that, an elephant’s tusk or a piece of ivory carved in the shape of a lucky animal (scarab, ladybird, owl).
Teeth (wolves, wild boars, bears) are believed to invest the wearer with the strength of the animal to which they belonged.
A separate category includes:
• Anything associated with a hanged man, for example, rope, clothing.
• A chimney sweep or a hunchback are both regarded as lucky charms, although it is not really known why!
• Religious objects: the hand of Fatima (daughter of the prophet Mohammed), an image of Saint Christopher, pieces from the cross of Christ or the relics of a saint also come under the heading of lucky charms insofar as they are invested with protective powers.
Charms from the mineral world: stones and metals
a) Stones
In ancient times stones were not regarded as inert matter. Minerals were thought to have fallen from the sky and, as such, to act as intermediaries between heaven and earth. It was believed that, placed in particular arrangements (cairns, megaliths), they sent messages to the gods.
Volcanic stones and – preferably black – meteorites were very early in history regarded as “speaking” stones (for example, the black stone set in the south-east corner of the Kaaba in Mecca, or the black stone of the Phrygian goddess Cybele). When our ancestors realised that certain stones were more beautiful and rarer than others, they used them to decorate cult objects. In this way, crystals became widely used and were considered to have certain powers, depending on their colour. Given that crystals are formed over millions of years, it is easy to understand why they are regarded as a “memory of the Universe” and consequently invested with immeasurable powers.
Semi-precious stones include:
Rock crystal, admired for its clearness, is undoubtedly one of the best known. Today it is used to improve intuition and, more so, for its curative properties.
Pink quartz offers protection against lies and deceit.
Lodestone or magnetite (ferrous and ferric oxides in cubic crystalline form) has the power to attract or hold on to a loved one. It also bestows the power to recover lost dynamism.
Agate, a form of quartz consisting of variegated (usually banded) chalcedony, was widely used by the Ancient Egyptians. It is known as chrysoprase when the chalcedony is apple-green, carnelian when it is red or reddish yellow, sapphirine when it is blue or bluish-green, sard (or sardius) when it red, orange or brown, and chalcedony when it is a greyish colour.
Thus, agate is used to make lucky charms for a specific purpose, depending on its colour.
Aventurin protects travellers and garnet gives them courage.
Tourmaline makes merchants shrewd.
Amethyst is the stone of temperance. It offers protection against the evils of drunkenness and cures gout.
Beryl promotes the power of memory and protects intellectuals.
Chrysolite (or olivine) brings honour and fame.
Jade ensures good health and favours premonitory dreams.
Lapis lazuli restores lost hope and courage.
Turquoise brings luck and happiness to the wearer.
Opal brings happiness (white opal) and wealth (black opal).
Precious stones include:
Diamond, the most sought after, is the symbol of purity and fidelity, and guarantees happy marriages. It is regarded as a talisman that protects against all evils, vices and dangers.
Ruby, like all red stones (sard, carnelian), brings courage, health and happiness.
Emerald, more popular in the East than the West, is the stone of universal knowledge. It is also believed to bestow fertility and immortality.
Sapphire, like all blue stones, brings intuition.
Correspondence between stones, months of the year and astrological signs
Each month of the year and each astrological sign has its own particular stone. The correspondence between the stones, months and signs should be taken in to account if you want to take full advantage of the powers attributed to the stones when making a talisman.

Lucky charms, talismans and pentacles
Take a few moments to consider your relationship with the everyday objects around you. If you are honest with yourself, you will find that you have – at one time or another and probably on more than one occasion – invested some of them with an importance and power that far exceeded their intrinsic nature! This is why you carry a four-leaf clover or a photo in your wallet or purse, or wear a Saint Christopher medallion or a lucky charm. It doesn’t matter what the object is, the important thing is that it reassures, comforts and even protects you! You needn’t be ashamed of doing this and, above all, don’t think of it as being childish or superstitious. You are not the first, and will certainly not be the last person to do it! Prehistoric cave paintings provide the earliest evidence of signs and symbols that reflect Man’s desire to appropriate certain powers or invoke protection by means of “magic” drawings.
This means that, thousands of years ago, prehistoric Man was already instinctively trying to attract the favours of destiny through the power of imagery. These images (hands, wild horses, bison and bears), found on the walls of certain caves (for example, Lascaux in France), are certainly the most ancient form of the pentacle. It is tempting to think that the more primitive the age, the greater the attempt to attract the favours of destiny through the use of images, objects and prayer. In this particular instance, the aim would be to ensure the success of hunting expeditions or the fertility of the womenfolk.
Today, in spite of the high level of technology achieved by the human race, the principle remains the same. It would even appear that by trying to rationalise everything, we have only added to our own dilemma. This is reflected in the constant quest for a spirituality that scientific knowledge, however advanced, has been unable to suppress. Life, death, suffering, good, evil, luck and the future will always be a source of mystery and anguish for humankind, an anguish that we seek to appease in a number of different ways. Science has undoubtedly brought a great many advantages but, far from satisfying human intelligence, it has, on the contrary, raised an increasing number of questions. And, strangely enough, rather than turning to science to provide the answers to our problems, we tend to seek moral comfort in ancient methods whose very durability (they have existed for thousands of years) gives them a kind of added value.
This is why people have always associated, and will continue to associate, lucky charms, amulets, talismans and pentacles with magic powers that even the more sceptical among us are reluctant to challenge. Thus, whether or not we are superstitious, we still hesitate to walk under a ladder, we avoid the number 13 (hotels often have no room 13), feel more comfortable with a four-leaf clover in our pocket and will happily hang up a horse shoe in or around the home. The list is endless, to the point that people no longer know which objects, symbolic animals and plants are likely to bring luck into their lives.

The symbolism of the 9 essential numbers
It is important to know that each of these 9 numbers has its own

that is at once intuitive and scientific, you will be able to make
full use of the vibrations emitted by these numbers. Work out the

Acquired luck
The psychology of luck
If you are not satisfied with the luck that destiny meted out to you at birth, remember that you cannot afford to waste the smallest piece of this “meagre portion”. Better still, remember that it is not difficult to increase it significantly, so that you build up a store of luck that is greater than the luck enjoyed by certain people who, although “born lucky”, deplete their precious reserve or, even worse, don’t use it at all through laziness or ignorance. Take a good look around you and you will see happy people, surrounded by a happy family, with no apparent financial problems and living a comfortable life. Ask them if they’ve inherited a fortune, if they’ve won the lottery, if they’ve had a particularly successful career. Most will tell the same story as yours, a simple story composed of lots of small pieces of happiness. They won’t mention their problems, although they undoubtedly have some, just as you do. Other people, however, will only talk about their problems, forgetting that they have a much higher income than yours. Finally, remember that there are also people who, although beautiful, rich and famous, are continually depressed, take drugs and commit suicide.
From this, you can deduce that:
• what makes some people happy doesn’t necessarily make everyone happy.
• wishing for what you haven’t got, or envying other people for what they have, is a waste of time and can make you miss out on your own happiness.
• happiness and luck are small events that occur naturally in your life, adding to its interest and serenity.
• like happiness, luck is primarily a state of mind. Remember that adopting the right approach to life is your most important asset when it comes to happiness and luck.
Remember that:
• you often create the luck you have by thinking and acting in a positive manner.
• behind every success, there is often a great deal of hard work, effort and patience. There is also a person who thinks and acts in a positive way: confidently, rationally and methodically. It is up to you to be one of these people whose destiny you envy to a greater or lesser degree. To do this, you don’t need to win the jackpot on the lottery, inherit a fortune from a rich uncle in America, be a film star or run a multinational company.
Just remember:
• to feel comfortable with yourself
• to act confidently
• not to attribute too much importance to your failures
• not to waste time pleading poverty but do what you have to in order to be in the right place at the right time. Believe me, this is not so much a question of luck as industrious ingenuity!
