Let’s take a look first at the ‘occult anatomy’ of the human being and the functions of the seven chakras, drawing on the knowledge of the sages of Ancient India. These great initiates believed each human being had 7 vital energy centers.
In Sanskrit, the term chakra means a rotating disc or wheel. These chakras are found along the length of a vertical axis, which corresponds to the vertebral column.
[Note: you may find it easier to visualise the location of the chakras in the body if you refer to the diagram of the 7 major chakras on the last page of your book]
A chakra is an energy centre in our etheric aura, in other words, in the biomagnetic field that forms a natural envelope around the physical body. Invisible to the eye (except for those with the gift of clairvoyance) it is not physical in the true sense of the term.
A chakra is essentially etheric, which means it is made up of ethereal matter, more subtle than the physical body because its atoms vibrate at a much higher frequency. That’s why it remains invisible.
Chakras could be likened to centres for the transformation and distribution of heavenly and earthly energy (cosmic and telluric forces). Their basic function may be more easily understood if you know that without them, in other words if human beings received cosmic energy directly, without any transformation process, the body would go into an immediate "meltdown", obliterated by this incredibly powerful force shooting right through them.
Chakras, then, have the task of preventing any energy we cannot absorb from entering our bodies. This quantity of energy is proportional to our level of consciousness: the more open the chakras, the broader our field of consciousness, and in turn, the more our chakras open, and so on.
Chakras transform the various energies that enter our bodies and distribute them through the physical body through the intermediary of the endocrine glands, which then secrete them into the bloodstream.
You can imagine the chakras as coloured wheels of light, whirls of energy in the form of funnels, turning clockwise in on themselves. They are equipped with ‘blades’, like a fan, or ‘petals’, like a flower, which turn, creating the funnel shape. It is through the rotation of these wheels that the cosmic universal energy is absorbed into the interior of the chakras and then distributed around the body.
The chakras operate like a sort of antenna, picking up on any vibrations in their vicinity. Through various functions, these energy centres link us to everything that is happening around us, in nature and in the Universe.
We might see our own chakras as the organs of the "subtle senses". Our physical body, with its 5 senses (sight/hearing/smell/taste/touch) is a vehicle adapted to the vital laws of our planet and thanks to it we can find our way in our day-to-day existence. The chakras function as receivers of energetic vibrations reverberating ‘above’ the physical level. They are like openings that connect us with the magical and infinite world of more subtle energies.
One important thing to remember: to live in harmony with yourself, others and the environment, to welcome power, creativity and love into your life, the chakras must be ‘open’ and harmonised.
Basically, the more open a person’s chakras, the more evolved they are and the more energy they have to achieve their goals in life.
Inversely, someone whose chakras are ‘blocked’ and not functioning harmoniously, will not only pick up very little universal cosmic energy, they also accumulate a surplus of negative vibrations. This accumulation of harmful energy makes them vulnerable and is the root cause of many problems in their life.
