the
ancients celebrated Litha, the longest day of the year when nature's powers are
at their peak, corresponding to St John for Christians. On Litha's day, say a
prayer of thanks to nature's spirits for fertility and the gifts that nature
brings you, and do it in front of a mirror that has a white candle burning in
front of it. On this day, the Sun will start to move towards the horizon and
days will start to get shorter. The veil between the worlds is thin at Beltane
and we can encounter spirits because they can cross more easily. Positive
energy is at a maximum, and it is a propitious time for magic for love, healing
and protection. Make the most of it by lighting bonfires, passing St John's
Wort through the smoke and then hanging the plant in your home's main doorway. This
is the time to buy magic herbs and oils to use in rituals or recipes during the
year, because now their power is at a maximum. Think about destroying very old
amulets or protective objects that have lost their power, by throwing them in
the sacred fire and replacing them. Leave honey and milk on your doorstep as an
offering to the spirits of nature. And don't forget that this is a great day to
make a wand, the traditional wizard's tool.
